Energy Management in Public Sector Buildings

Enhance is a collaborative research project on energy management in public sector buildings, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The aim of the project is to use data analytics to help provide feedback to building users to understand and reduce energy demand. We aim to work with the City of Edinburgh Council energy and facilities’ management teams and the University of Edinburgh estates and buildings department.  

The multidisciplinary research team comprises experts in Informatics, Architecture, Social Science, and Human Computer Interaction, including Dr Nigel Goddard, Dr Kate Carter, Prof. Janette Webb, Dr Lynda Webb, and Dr Evan Morgan. The Enhance team is taking a holistic approach to understanding energy use in non-domestic buildings, using both quantitative and qualitative data. We will investigate the effects of organisational behaviour on energy use, and we hope to gain relevant insights across all stakeholders, from top management to ground level office and public users of the buildings. We aim to collect energy data from building energy management systems (BEMS) and we plan to install additional sensors in buildings, where required. The combined analysis of actual energy use and stakeholder experiences will inform the co-design and co-creation of a Learning Energy System — engaging with people, objects, data and machines. As a result of this analysis, we aim to deliver a Living Labs innovation to help understand and reduce energy demand.

Enhance is a member of the EPSRC Network of (Build) TEDDI projects known as TEDDINET — Transforming Energy Demand through Digital Innovation. This is a research network addressing the challenges of transforming energy demand in buildings,  which encompass 27 universities, nearly 100 partners from industry and the housing sector, and over 250 researchers.
